Able Mable Thomas, who has served as both a State Representative in Georgia as well as City Council in Atlanta will discuss the criminal activities of the police in her community (The Bluffs) including the murders of 92 year old Kathryn Johnston and 19 year old Joetavius Stafford. She will also discuss current efforts to re-build the Atlanta community at large.

Every Thursday beginning December 15th the FTP Movement will sponsor the "Organization 101 Political Education Series." Each solution based session will focus on advancing the political education of not only organizers but also the masses of the people. There will be guest facilitators dealing with a variety of topics pertaining to community organizing. The classes will address everything from coalition building to curbing police brutality. Classes are free and open to the public. Mark your calendars and spread the word!

This first session's topic will be "Occupying, Organizing, and the Fight to Free Mumia Abu Jamal." We will discuss concrete solutions and plans of action that can bring about change. A portion of the discussion will be about next steps in the case of Mumia Abu Jamal; he is off death row and now its time to fight for his total freedom!

FTP Movement will be taking part in the 2012 King Memorial March in downtown Atlanta. We will be in full support of political prisoners, such as Imam Jamil Al-Amin, Mutulu Shakur, Mumia Abu Jamal, Sekou Odinga, Kamau Sadiki, Veronza Bowers, Move 9 and Sundiata Acoli- as w...ell as our elders who have been liberated such as Assata Shakur to name a few....and we absolutely will be vocal about Troy Davis. We are asking that you wear black as a sign of solidarity. You also may want to wear gloves because we will be carrying pickets and signs. Also, if you wou...ld like you can assist by donating poster boards and/or markers or creating signs that are in line with our theme. Drummers are also welcome

What is a Political Prisoner? A political prisoner is someone who was targeted and imprisoned because of his or her political actions, affiliations and/or beliefs.

Why Should They Be Supported? They should be supported because these individuals were committed to confronting the oppression and exploitation in their communities that made their lives and the lives of their neighbors intolerable.

Prepare EVERYTHING at night, go to bed on time and wake up 30 minutes early before alarm to make for a smooth morning. I iron and lay out everyone's clothes, pack lunch for two days for all the seeds, make sure all homework is checked and packed, all school forms are signed, and group together the ingredients I'm going to make their hot breakfast with the night before. I also set my clock 30-45 minutes fast. Mornings are sacred and shouldn't be rushed. It rattles the seeds and pisses mommies off. Preparing for your day in advance makes for a peaceful and loving time for the family. Breakfast isn't rushed and you aren't burning up your gas by flooring it at every green light. #MommyTips

RISE IN UHURU- TROY ANTHONY DAVIS 1968- 2011

Dear Family-
It breaks my heart to tell you that despite our efforts- that Georgia executed an innocent man, our beloved friend and brother, Troy Anthony Davis.

I came to know about is case in 2008. FTP Movement Chief Coordinator Kalonji Changa and I trekked down to Savannah, GA- one of the most racist towns still standing in America. It was at this time that I met Troy's family, his sister Martina Davis- Correra, her son DeJuan and their mother, the late Virginia Davis. They spoke with us about his case, and it was a no brainer that the FTP Movement would get behind this cause. Was it because we liked Troy and we just thought he was innocent? No. It was because the FACTS did not justify his imprisonment, conviction- yet alone an execution. And we had unwavering faith that he would be exonerated- especially since he had been given a stay four times.

FTP Movement has strong ties in the hip hop community nationwide. We were able to get the word out amongst our collectives and get them involved. The energy spread like wildfire. We would go on to organize Poets for Political Prisoners and Crew Loves that drew more attention to his plight. We worked in conjunction with Amnesty International and the Georgians For Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the like. Our comrades in other cites also got the word out amongst their sets, and a movement was born.

As time went on, we grew closer to the Davis family. We sent healing love as Martina battled cancer, and mourned with them with their matriarch, Virginia Davis died. We watched DeJuan grow from little boy to a young man and budding activist in his own right. We wrote and visited Troy. Our children sent him letters and pictures in prison. We developed a kinship with him. He became more to us than a case we were fighting for.

Time began to reach the end pint, and we became even more aggressive in our efforts. Under the direction of Kalonji Jama Changa, the FTP Movement began a staunch in your face campaign for the life of Troy to be spared. As the hour neared, we ate- slept- and breathed this case. In the last days, we marched in the rain. DJ 4th-Wurld and my husband DJ Amond Jackson gathered over 1,000 call- ins for the 15 episodes and counting series "I AM TROY DAVIS"- real time e-blast campaign- in which people from all walks of life all over the world called in and let their voices be heard. We were in print- as Kalonji mentioned the case of Troy in his debut book- "How To Build A People's Army." Kalonji and the FTP Movement was instrumental in helping secure over 700,000 signatures on behalf of Troy to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles. Despite all of the evidence and support, Troy's clemency request was denied. The execution date would go forward as planned. That date was 9/21/2011 at 7pm.

Grassroots International Rally To Stop The Execution of Troy Davis

On 9/20/2011- FTP Movement in solidarity with the Nation of Gods and Earths, The New Black Panther Party, the Prisoners of Conscience Committee, Cop Watch and others gathered at Woodruff Park and marched to the capitol to join up with Amnesty International's rally at the Georgia capitol on Washington St.- downtown Atlanta. "Not in My Name" was the theme of this protest. The Davis family spoke through Kim and DeJuan, as Martina was too sick to attend. What a dynamic sight to see the many faces who were in support of Troy. All colors, faiths, religions and sexualities- it didn't matter- Troy was the matter we all agreed upon....that WE are Troy Davis.

I went to Jackson, GA yesterday with my friend Tameka Navarro (wife of Broady Champs & School Of Sharks producer Lex Boogie), my oldest son Dub Boogie and my youngest son, Dilla Premier Wonder. We met up with Craig "Flux" Singleton of Binkis Recs and Goldi Gold of Junge 45, and FTP's publicist- Ain Hd. Singer Madame CJ and Atallah Shabazz of Lite Pamoja linked up with us too. We stood amongst hundreds and peacefully protested for the life of Troy. However, there were some protesters who had every attention in making a stand by any means to the police. As a result- the police numbers grew and out numbered the crowd. In a show of force, Georgia State Patrol cars at least 20 in numbers came racing down the street in front of us- lights flashing and sirens going.... jumping out in riot gear in preparation for battle. But we were not moved as we chanted "shame on you." We endured hours of back and forth between whether or not the US Supreme Court would grant clemency. At the final hour, it was denied. What also came as a shock to many is that this country first Black president didn't as much lift a finger to say- hey guys- pause. Lets look closer.

Troy was executed, and was pronounced dead at 11:08 pm.

"Strange fruit hanging from the oak tree in Jackson, Ga... Troy Davis (October 10, 1968- September 21, 2011). Rest in Uhuru."- my post on Twitter as the news came down.

The saddest part about this story is that for one- the truth about who murdered Officer Mark McPhail has not come out....the state executed the wrong man....and that Troy could possibly not be the last man that this happens to. The fact that the case is so opaque shows that it could happen to ANYONE. You could be Troy Davis.

The fight is not over. For many of you- the fight has just begun. And I don't mean fight as in violence- I mean fight as in lets change what is happening in this country. I hope this has inspired you to get more involved. Make your voice be heard.

You are Troy Davis. Never forget.

Caravan from Atlanta to Jackson, GA for vigil for Troy Davis. The vigil starts at Noon and will last through the night (Troy's execution - which hopefully will be stayed - is scheduled for 7PM) at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, HWY 36 West, Post Office Box 3877, Jackson, GA 30233 - and across from the prison at Towaliga County Line Baptist Church - 153 Short Rd, Jackson, GA 30233.

We will be meeting in the rear of the West End Train Station parking lot (680 Lee St. SW) at 2:45PM and departing at 3PM SHARP. It will take from 45 minutes to 1 hour to arrive, so we'll get there no later than 4PM.

Tupac Amaru Shakur- 6/16/1971- 9/13/1996

Tupac Shakur has the perfect name. He is named after Tupac Amaru- the last indigenous leader of the Inca state- Vilcabamba in Peru. He was convicted of the murder of the priests in Vilcabamba- the indigenous land that the Spanish conquistadors invaded and took over. They justified the killings by blaming the wars on Tupac Amaru- claiming that had he just retreated and surrendered, he would've saved his people. Tupac Amaru would rather die trying, than to live at the feet of his people's oppressors. In 1572, Túpac Amaru was convicted of the murder of the priests in Vilcabamba- which all history books present the doubt that he was guilty of such a crime. His last words were: "Ccollanan Pachacamac ricuy auccacunac yahuarniy hichascancuta." (translation: "Mother Earth, witness how my enemies shed my blood.")

Tupac is more than a hip hop artist to me... to me.... he was/ is a soldier for the People. Him and his music as well as his life are relevant to the history of America in general. He deserves a place in the history books. He deserves to be discussed in academia. His words should be taught to our children. Yes, he had some records that were diststeful. However, more of his records were waking the masses and hipping them to what was really going on around them. A very intellegent brother with two dynamic sides of his personality. My heart goes to my beloved elders- both his mother and father- Mama Afeni Shakur and Baba Dr. Mutulu Shakur.... love as well as his comrades- the Outlawz.

My personal favorite song by Tupac Shakur was "Violent." One of his first videos and songs released from his historical debut- "2PACALYPSE NOW," it inspired my young mind. It advised me that being from the hood was not a pass to be ignorant and excelling in life was the only option. It encouraged me to not believe everything I was being told, and to do the research to be an asset to those around me.

Yetunde has been arrested on charges that were dismissed due to the arrest being illegal. However, because she is not a citizen she is being held for ICE. This means that she will eventually have to go to court to determine whether or not she will be deported. Prior to this, however, there will have to be a bond hearing. The good news is that when bond is set we will have an opportunity to bond her out so that she and her husband can complete the paperwork necessary to make sure she is not deported. This is where we need your help!

Community Activist, Tatiana “Jasira” Lima, is being prosecuted for a crime she did not commit; the murder of her one month old baby girl, Akira. Tatiana, who is an active member and leader in various community and cultural organizations, has worked extensively in support of Hurricane Katrina survivors, homeless, and young people of color. This committed young organizer is now in need of your support as she sits in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta falsely accused of the murder of her own daughter. Tatiana has been in jail without much hope of release since November of 2010.

Tatiana’s initial bond was set at $170,000. However, on July 18th, 2011, Attorney Davis successfully argued for the bond to be reduced to $50,000. “This is a promising first step for the case but now she needs the community and family support”, said Attorney Davis after the hearing. As of today, Tatiana remains in jail unable to post a bond. $7500 (15% of the total bond amount) is needed to secure Tatiana’s release from jail.

Mrs. Virginia Davis, mother of Troy Anthony Davis passed away in her sleep on 4/14/11, reportedly of natural causes. But I beg to differ. There is nothing natural about how she died.....how this pain came upon her.

I was introduced to Mama Virginia and Troy's sister, Martina Correia by my comrade Kalonji Changa (our national chief coordinator of the FTP Movement) on a road trip that we took down to Savannah, GA to take part in a rally for support for Troy. She was so peaceful, loving, elegant and kind. But being a mother of three Black men myself, I saw a pain in her kind eyes that she could not conceal through a lovely smile. She carried a heavy burden on her heart that I could never imagine the pain of carrying. To see her son sitting on death row for a crime he did not commit- and to have been given several execution dates and stays, as well as near victories of higher courts hearing his case, yet still being denied as the hours counted down, I simply believe that her heart could not take anymore. While she was only 65 years young, I believe this experience aged her- and I concur with her daughter Martina- Mama Virginia ultimately died from a broken heart.

FYI- Stress cardiomyopathy, also referred to as the “broken heart syndrome,” is a condition in which intense emotional or physical stress can cause rapid and severe heart muscle weakness (cardiomyopathy). This condition can occur following a variety of emotional stressors such as grief (e.g. death or sickness of a loved one), fear, extreme anger, and surprise. It can also occur following numerous physical stressors to the body. I believe these are emotions that Mama Virginia experienced since November 15, 1989- the date a grand jury indicted Troy with murder of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail, assaulting Larry Young with a pistol, shooting Michael Cooper, obstructing Officer MacPhail in performance of his duty and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Despite national outcry proclaiming the grave injustice of putting an innocent man to death- despite an overwhelming amount of physical and scientifical evidence that could prove Troy's innocence yet has been denied to be presented in court- despite petitions and protests- the Supreme Court has still upheld the decision to put Troy to death. After three execution stays and numerous appeals, on 3/28/11, the United States Supreme Court rejected Troy's appeal for delay of execution to prove his "actual innocence. "This set the stage for a new execution date for Troy- and I simply believe that Mama Virginia could not physically take it anymore.

Where is the justice for either family? Doesn't the MacPhail family deserve the justice of the right person being made to pay for the crime? The same justice is owed to the Davis family....freeing the man that has been railroaded for a crime he did not commit. This is not the definition of justice in either case.

Rest in Uhuru (Freedom) Mama Virginia Davis. To be absent with the body is to be present with the Lord....go get your crown. We love you, and we will never forget what caused your broken heart..... and we will continue to support your children Troy and Martina- and keep fighting for his freedom. I know you will watch over us...

FTP Movement Gears Up to Feed People Around the Country

ATLANTA, GA – March 17, 2011 – On March 26 and 27, in a national effort to bring attention to America’s gross injustices against the poor, the FTP Movement is launching its 3rd annual Feed the People weekend. Participants working in solidarity across the country will be distributing packaged lunches, hygiene kits and bottled water to thousands of people in need. Cities contributing to the movement include San Diego, Harlem, Oakland, Detroit, Denver, Los Angeles, Richmond (VA), Staten Island, Anchorage (Alaska), Atlanta and various other locations.

Since its inception, the Feed the People Program has broadened its scope and served over 100,000 meals and care packages in several major metropolitan cities. In an effort to cover more ground and reach more people in need, the FTP Movement is calling for supporters around the country to lend a hand and a heart.

Launching the same weekend will be the Siafu Youth Corps, a program for youth ages 4 to 16. The Youth Corps will arm children with necessary life skills, gardening, community service, proper weapons handling, entrepreneurial skills and history courses.

The FTP movement was formed in response to the system’s disregard for the poor and oppressive conditions that support poverty. With a focus on uplifting the community, unity, justice, freedom and self-sufficiency, FTP strives to work on behalf of the people in the absence of wealthy donors and tax write-offs. As a true grassroots organization, FTP operates through the hearts of its members, who consistently serve with the passion to work as activists and revolutionaries.

The Feed the People initiative is just one program headed by the growing organization. Aside from the Siafu Youth Corps, under the FTP Movement umbrella sits Mama’s Army, FTP Artists Collective, MOBBB (Mothers of Black and Brown Babies) and Behind Enemy Lines (political prisoner program). Programs in which the organization has been involved include the Black August Commemoration, Happily Natural Day, Poets 4 Political Prisoners and Crew Love.

The organization of the FTP Movement is embodied by their logo, an artistic representation of the Siafu Ant of Eastern Africa. These ants paint the picture of teamwork. The Siafu has no eyes, no venom - only strong jaws. Individually they are small, but as a team they can strip a water buffalo down to the bone in less than an hour. The FTP Movement is much like the Siafu Ant – small in size, but powerful beyond measure.

More About the FTP Movement

FTP was founded in June of 2001 as a performance group. Their original mission was to use music as a vessel to engage others in the struggle for liberation. In 2004, the group’s founder, Kalonji Changa, moved to Atlanta. It was there that the FTP Movement’s first consistent programs began.

The FTP Movement is where theory meets practice— minus the empty rhetoric, mindless activism and fashionable militancy. Feed the People Catering will be one of the featured vegan food exhibitors at the Meat Out Food Fair, and this year our theme is "A Taste of the Caribbean", so come by our table and grab a bite of our good vegan eats!!!

while I was going back and forth with a good homegirl of mine about relationships- I began to think about my own. my husband AJ (Amond Jackson) has been more than a husband to me. He has been a friend, a confidant, a dumping ground when I've had a shitty day, an awful cook- yet he tries when I am too busy, a defender, a provider, a lover....all rolled into an awesomely handsome 170 pounds of divinity. he may not be perfect, but he's perfect for me. he's my peace, my safe haven, my shelter- and it is within him that i trust.

i try not to share personal details with anyone regarding my relationship- however i wanted to share this testimony with hose who feel like they may not find the one for them, or their circumstance does not welcome a divine partner. AJ and I got together with his daughter, my two sons and daughter- we got married and had one son together. this is our family, our reality. i love his daughter as if she were my own, and he adores my children to the end of time. i'm a renegade with a temper, he's a more gentler spirit. we balance each other out.

divine partnership cannot be found until you recognize the divinity within yourself, and you discern what it is that you want. we are what we attract. if one continues to have life draining and energy sucking relations, one has to step back and take a deep look in the mirror. find your divinity, then you can become the divine partner for that special one who is not perfect, but is perfect for you.

And at about 11:30AM we will be departing Othello's and caravanning to various locations in the Atlanta downtown/Auburn Ave area to distribute the bagged lunches, beverages, snacks, clothes and hygiene kits to the homeless and displaced!

We're hoping to see more participants come out and support our displaced brothers and sisters because this is FTP's 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL FEED THE PEOPLE WEEKEND, and we will be meeting up afterward at 2PM for a POTLUCK IN THE PARK(but you have to participate in feeding the people to get the park's location, I'll give you a hint, it's a 30310 zip code)!!! Although the Feed The People Program has served over 100,000 meals and care packages across the country, there are 40,000 homeless and displaced in Atlanta alone! Please lend a hand and heart by helping us collect donations at the Meat Out on Sunday March 20th in the Cosby Building of Spellman College between 1PM and 7PM.

LONDON (AFP) – Breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months is not necessarily best for a baby's health, British researchers said Friday, calling into question advice given to new mothers.

The team led by a paediatrician from University College London said babies fed only breast milk could suffer iron deficiency and may be more prone to allergies.

The study says babies could start to be weaned on to solids as early as four months, although other experts advised sticking to the existing guidelines.

Ten years ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended that infants should be exclusively breastfed for six months.

"Many Western countries, including 65 percent of European member states and the United States, elected not to follow this recommendation fully, or at all," the authors said, although Britain did.

The WHO recommendation "rested largely" on a review of 16 studies, including seven from developing countries.

It concluded that babies given only breast milk for six months had fewer infections and experienced no growth problems.

But another review of 33 studies found "no compelling evidence" not to introduce solids at four to six months, the experts said.

Some studies have also shown that breastfeeding for six months fails to give babies all the nutrition they need.

One US study from 2007 found that babies exclusively breastfed for six months were more likely to develop anaemia than those introduced to solids at four to six months.

On the issue of allergies, the British study said researchers in Sweden found that the incidence of early onset coeliac disease increased after a recommendation to delay introduction of gluten until age six months, "and it fell to previous levels after the recommendation reverted to four months".

The authors said however that exclusively breastfeeding for six months remains the best recommendation for developing countries, which have higher death rates from infection.

But in developed countries, it could lead to adverse health outcomes and may "reduce the window for introducing new tastes".

"Bitter tastes, in particular, may be important in the later acceptance of green leafy vegetables, which may potentially affect later food preferences with influence on health outcomes such as obesity."

The researchers said the European Food Safety Authority's panel on dietetic products, nutrition and allergies has concluded that for infants across the EU, complementary foods may be introduced safely between four to six months.

Experts in Britain challenged the findings of the new study.

Janet Fyle, professional policy adviser at the Royal College of Midwives, said: "I really must challenge the suggestion from the review that the UK should reconsider its current advice on exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

"I believe that this is a retrograde step and plays into the hands of the baby food industry which has failed to support the six-month exclusive breastfeeding policy in the UK."

12/25/10 Christmas in 30349- my queen, Umi loves this day more than any other day besides the seedz borndays- she blesses her grandchildren- as her mother did me. I came up with this recipe back when I had my first male seed- Dub Boogie. Because he was my first, he had a few different skin conditions that I was not familiar with and didn't know how to remedy the issue. One thing I did know is that I was;t big on rushing him to the doctor every time something was wrong- just to be given an prescription for western medicine that simply attacked the symptoms and not the cause. I decided to research what different tinctures, salves and ointments were good for what and I got my cook on. Fast forward 11 years- and I have a remedy for almost anything that ails you- and you don't need a prescription.

*to be used topically on diaper rash
*don't use on broken skin or make contact w/ the urethra
*not to be used on chronic skin conditions such as eczema
*chlorine free diapers and frequent changes after each urination or bowel movement; plus keeping the bottom dry also prevents rash

3 TSP organic coconut butter (melted)
2 TSP organic extra virgin olive oil
2 drops of sage, thyme or tea tree essential oil
3 TBS cornstarch

Whisk quickly and a apply to diaper rash or minor skin irritations.

A 26 year-old man named Frederick Jermaine Carter was found hung to death on Friday in a wealthy neighborhood in North Greenwood, MS, 12 miles away from Money, Mississippi, an area which became widely known in U.S. history after the lynching of 14 year-old Chicago native Emmett Till in 1955.

According to reports, Frederick Carter who is from Sunflower County, was found dead hanging from an oak tree in a field and his death was cited as committed suicide, however the NAACP is skeptical and suspicious of the claims.

Frederick Carter who was on medication allegedly suffered from mental illness and had the tendency to wander off. On Wednesday, Carter reportedly wandered off when his stepfather, who he was helping paint a building, left to go get a tool.

Sheriff Ricky Banks allegedly claims that the stepfather wasn’t bothered by him wandering off and added that Frederick Carter is a mental patient taking medication.

As for Carter’s remainings, authorities stated that in the area that they found him, no other tracks had been found and there were no signs around the tree where he was hanging.

State Rep and Leflore County branch NAACP President Willie Perkins meanwhile have a lot of concerns over the incident and stated that Frederick Carter couldn’t have hung himself without the assistance of someone. Perkins also questioned why would someone go that far to hang themselves in North Greenwood by a river in a predominantly white housing area.

As for witnesses, an unidentified man said he spoke to Frederick Carter and asked what he was doing in the area and claimed that Frederick Carter stated he was just walking and wouldn’t talk to him.

Sen. David Jordan added that everyone is concerned due to the past history of the area and they’re skeptical and should be.

The historic Wheat Street Baptist Church is once again taking the lead in bringing growth and opportunity to the heart of Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. One of the nation's oldest African American Churches has leased four acres of inner city land to Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture (TLW) to build an organic vegetable garden. With the help of District 2 City Council Member Kwanza Hall and a generous investment by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, TLW will soon bring fresh vegetables to an inner city community that has seen its share of glory and blight. The new garden site will be a market place and a training center for Atlanta citizens interested in urban agriculture.

There is a growing movement in the US and around the world to grow organic foods where most people live, which is in cities. In an area of downtown Atlanta that is well known locally and around the world, the use of the currently vacant Wheat Street Garden property is an innovative way to promote forward thinking and nourish the people of Atlanta.

Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall played a leading role in making this new city farm possible. ”This is exciting news for the Old Fourth Ward”, he says. “Just three years after we brought together hundreds of community members for a year long master planning process, our vision of the neighborhood as a test bed of innovation for the city as a whole, is coming true.”

As metro Atlanta's temperatures grow colder, the demand for heat is, well, heating up. A day after hundreds of people queued up outside a Marietta community center to apply for assistance with heat and power bills, hopeful applicants began lining up again around midnight, waiting in the sub-freezing temperatures for the doors to open Thursday morning.

This time, however, officials let those in line come into the Mansour Center on Roswell Street an hour early at 7:30 and get relief from temperatures that dropped to 27 degrees.

“We’re freezing,” said Lecher Eady, a Marietta mother who arrived at midnight seeking help with her bills. “Our hands are cold, our feet are cold.”

Eady, the mother of triplets in diapers, said she has been out of work since August.

“I’ve had three jobs this year, and I’ve been laid off from all three,” she said. “I’m grateful just to get any type of help they’ll give me.”

Eady said she is trying to start a nonprofit organization, “Babies Need Diapers,” that would provide diapers to low-income single mothers.

“We have assistance for food, we have assistance for clothing, but we don’t have assistance for diapers,” she said. “That’s my biggest struggle right now.”

Joining Eady near the front of the line that had grown to about 30 people by 7:30 was Isata Kamara, a single mom of a 3-year-old.

“My electric bill and my gas bill are going to get cut off because I don’t have the money right now,” said Kamara, who recently lost her job.

“I saw it on the news and decided to come up here because I really need the help,” she said.

Those news reports Wednesday night showed hundreds of people who lined up around the building throughout the day on Wednesday. Channel 2 Action News reported that ambulances were called for at least two people who had difficulty dealing with Wednesday’s cold temperatures.

In DeKalb County, Atlanta police were called to the Atlanta DeKalb Human Services Building on Warren Street Wednesday morning after "loud arguing" broke out among a large crowd gathered to apply for energy assistance, according to police dispatchers.

Lakesha Charles, who has been out of work for two years, was number 16 in the Marietta line Thursday, which, she said, is “better than number 100.”

The mother of six said she “heard it was ridiculous” on Wednesday, when only 30 people at a time were let into the assistance center.“Hopefully, we can get in and get help,” she said.

“I saw it on the news and decided to come up here because I really need the help,” Kamara said. “You’ve got to stand in line, because it’s not going to come to you.”

That heating assistance will come in handy next week, when a surge of cold Canadian air will send overnight lows in metro Atlanta plummeting to the low 20s, with afternoon highs warming only into the mid-40s.

The forecast for metro Atlanta calls for sunny skies and highs in the 50s through Friday, with overnight lows around the freezing mark.

There's a 20 percent chance of showers on Saturday, when highs will be in the upper 50s. Sunday will be windy, as a cold front arrives and keeps temperatures in the 40s.

Overnight lows will be in the mid-30s Saturday night, mid-20s Sunday and Monday nights and low 20s Tuesday night.

Atlanta’s longest-running Hip-Hop show representing quality hip hop music – The Beatz & Lyrics Show with Jayforce , is back with a new A3C Festival Mixtape. Last year’s project featured contributions by over 40 emcees, producers and musicians who came together in less than a week to record the 12-track project of all original music. The 2009 Beatz and Lyrics A3C mixtape was a celebration of the show’s 10th year on the air. After its success, Executive Producer Amond Jackson decided to make this years’ edition just as special.

The 2009 Beatz and Lyrics 10th anniversary A3C mixtape was recorded in 72 hours at Salem Psalms Library in Atlanta, Ga. This year’s mission was to record the mixtape on site at the festival. With help from Unique Squared, one of the leaders in pro audio gear, the team brought out an RV stocked with all of the best gear from AVID/DigiDesign (creators of Protools), Native Instruments, Focusrite, JBL, M Audio, Mackie and custom sound treatment from Auralex to create a professional recording studio that could travel to the Festival. Once the RV was assembled (Assembling the RV) ,recording started at 4 a.m. October 7th with Dungeon Family group The 5ive and did not stop until Sunday morning, as the Festival ended.

The Beatz and Lyrics Show did a special 5 hour show Saturday night and Tallahassee's WFVS 89.7 FM Underground Rail Road Show, did interviews outside the RV while MC’s recording in the mobile studio booth was broadcast live into the venue. Also a documentary about Independent music was filmed inside the RV. The film will be posted on Kevinnnotingham.com, which also hosted Unique Squared’s Beat Competition that gave away a custom Native Instruments Maschine to producer Tall Black Guy . The track he produced became a lead song for the project called Star Struck by 4ize.

This year’s mixtape features contributions from over 70 different artists and producers. Artists like Camp Lo, Artifacts, J-Live, Aleon Craft, and Sha Stimuli recorded tracks and other notables such as 9th Wonder, DJ Toomp, and DJ Evil Dee checked in (A3C Wrap-up). Production team The Dynamite Brothers (J Haze and Amond Jackson) put the mix tape together and DJ Precyse provided all of the cuts.

Founded in 1999, The Beatz & Lyrics Show with Jay Force airs every other Saturday on Atlanta’s WRFG 89.3 FM from 10pm-1am EST. Since its inception, the show has focused on providing the necessary balance missing from mainstream hip hop radio. DeKalb County (GA) delays school closings until 2011- 2012 school year

DeKalb County parents will have to wait to find out the long-term fate of their schools. For now, the county will not close any of them this year.

In a total reversal from last week, the school board voted unanimously on Monday night to delay school closures.

The board now plans to conduct a county-wide redistricting and close 10-12 schools next school year, interim superintendent Ramona Tyson said.

Last month, the board voted on a tentative budget that included $115 million in cuts, including closing four elementary schools to save $2.35 million. Monday’s vote removed the school closings from that budget, which is up for approval next week.

Once again transportation funding reform legislation is coming down to its final days in the Georgia Legislature. Georgians need more convenient ways to travel around our cities and across our great state. If our legislators do not act now, existing routes will be cut and service will be decreased. Workers will not be able to get to their jobs and the already weakened economy will be hurt even more.

We know that until there is a crisis things do not happen. With the shutdown of the Clayton County bus system, C-TRAN, at the end of March, MARTA facing 30% cuts in service, and the layoff of 1000 employees, I'd say the crisis is here now.

Your state senator and representative need to hear from you. Urge them to support legislation that includes MARTA funding flexibility and funding for mass transit.
Please call your state senator's and representative's office and let them know reform needs to pass before they leave next Thursday, April 29. An email is great but a phone call to their office at the Capitol is the most effective means for making your voice heard.

I was listening to the Frank & Wanda Morning Show on Monday, and it looks like Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is going to make good on his promise to young people.

For starters- The Atlanta Workforce Development Agency said it hopes to help thousands of young people find jobs this summer. The progam is being funded via President Barack Obama's stimulus funds.Deborah Lum with the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency said the state has enough federal money to hire up to 4,000 teens for the summer- but employers need to "step up with jobs. We have attorney's offices, we have drugstores, whoever is willing to take our students, we're actually paying $8.50 an hour for 35 hours a week," Lum said.

The City of Atlanta’s Office of Recreation will host the 2010 Camp Best Friends program for over 2500 children ages 5-17 years old. Camp Best Friends has been serving families throughout metro Atlanta for over 25 years. There will be 8 specialty camps, 10 day camps, 2 teen camps and a senior camp for ages 50 years and older.

The 2010 summer season starts June 1st through July 23rd, and the extended camp will be available from July 26 – August 6 at 4 locations throughout the City of Atlanta. Camp Hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily.

DeKalb County (GA) adopts budget with school closings

Without a citizens’ panel recommendation, DeKalb County will move forward with the closure of four schools to help meet an anticipated $115 million budget shortfall.

The school board voted 5 to 4 on Monday night to tentatively approve across the board cuts and no tax increase. The reductions include at least 430 layoffs, four elementary school closings and staff furloughs.

Further complicating matters, the citizen's task force, after earlier voting not to shut down any schools, will vote on a recommendation on Tuesday for the district to close Gresham Park Elementary and Knollwood Elementary, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned. Closing those schools would only save $1.18 million.

Fulton County (GA) parents gather to create plan to stop education cuts

Fulton County parents organized at a local bar last Tuesday night to create a plan they want to see kill the budget cut talk- specifically surrounding the Band & Orchestra program in Fulton County Schools.

“We’re witnessing a horrific attack on our future,” said Joel Dallow, a parent who's spearheading this effort in his Roswell (north Fulton County) community.

The state has suffered more than $3 billion in cuts to education in just the past seven years, Dallow pointed out.

“This problem is so systemic in this state, we need to do something,” he said, garning verbal affirmation and applause.

A cellist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Dallow organized the meeting after becoming concerned about recent budget cuts approved by the Fulton County Board of Education, including the district’s popular elementary band and orchestra program.

The boy crisis: Keeping alpha males in their seats and in school

I have read about the boys educational crisis in various places. One thing that is being overlooked: changes in the disciplinary environment in the school and the home negatively affect boys. For decades, we have heard feminists insist that differences in behavior between the sexes are not due to biology but rather due to social constructs imposed on society by the self-serving patriarchy (which was why we abandoned the biological term “sex” in favor of the social construct “gender”).

So, the solution to male misbehavior has been to tell them that it is acceptable, even desirable to “reject the patriarchy” and renounce masculinity in favor of being more feminine (basically Carol Gilligan’s solution to the boys crisis).

Even though they have largely been ignored by the various waves of feminists, research in neuroscience and psychology refutes a lot of these theories as unworkable. Because of differences in body chemistry (i.e. testosterone levels) and brain structure, boys are going to simply be more, well, defiant. Some are going to express it actively (i.e. the “alpha male” who tries to compete, lead, win, and impose himself on others). But others are going to defy authority using passive-aggressive techniques instead, such as with escapism (i.e. the Walter Mitty), withdrawing (i.e. the video gamers) and fatalistic cynicism (i.e. the Holden Caulfields).

Now just as some boys are going to be more feminine as Carol Gilligan and similar idealize, some boys aren’t going to naturally find ways to challenge authority. But the reality is that because of their physical and chemical makeup, lots of boys are.

(Georgia) DeKalb's Citezines Task Force says "no" to closing any school

A DeKalb County citizens group charged with naming schools to close decided to do nothing.

After four hours of arguing, accusations of racism and one member storming out, the Citizens Planning Task Force voted Thursday night that no school should close.

The DeKalb school board appointed the task force to review data and recommend the closure of four elementary schools at the end of the school year. The closings, which had to be approved by the board, were needed to help offset an anticipated $115 million deficit, board members said.

Instead, the task force took several votes Thursday night and decided to give the job to the school board.

“We’re considering closing schools in areas that involve very high-risk students, students from high-risk situations, single parents, some living with grandparents and a lot on free lunch programs,” task force member Charles Hill said. “I don’t feel right. I’m not comfortable with that. It just don’t feel right in my heart.”

While the majority of the 20 task force members said they wanted no schools closed, they also decided to send the board the list of 10 schools that were under consideration.

“If any board member has forced any citizen to do their work in hurting our children and to hide behind our task force, that person is unfit to serve on our school board,” task force member Bruce McMillian said. “Here board, you decide which four schools should close.”

The list includes Atherton, Clifton, Flat Shoals, Gresham Park, Kelley Lake, Knollwood, Meadowview, Peachcrest, Rowland and Sky Haven. Aisha Oni Alayande
Aisha Alayande’s education in the healing power of herbs began over 30 years ago as an apprentice to her grandmother and great aunt. Herbs like roselle, cerasse, peppermint, hibiscus, ginger and rose hips were always brewed for a healthy drink. In 2003 her mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimers and in an attempt to find an alternative treatment, Aisha and her husband began studying herb books but Aisha never stopped. Soon she started following the work of medicine women and taking courses in botanical medicine and holistic healing.

In 2004, she opened up The Healing Pot, an herbal tea company dedicated to preventing dis-ease. With this company she fuses her love of tea, natural health and writing. Her focus of study has been in holistic health for the reproductive system. She enjoys communicating ways in which to regulate and honor a woman's moon-time (menstrual cycle) as well as create a welcoming womb for families that want a child. Eloquently and effortlessly, she reminds all that we must connect with our bodies and the earth so that we are functioning properly and not falling victim to the poor choices some make when it comes to mental, physical and spiritual nourishment.

Aisha and her husband have 6 healthy children. They have experienced a natural birth in a hospital, twins delivered via cesarean section, one vbac and two home births, one of which was unassisted. Her editorial publications include, Honey Magazine and The Art and Science of Beautiful Skin, she is the Expert Herbalist for NaturalBabyPros.com and she writes articles about holistic health and the benefits of herbs on her website, thehealingpot.com. Her holistic studies and training as well as her childbirth experience and education make her a great resource for the world of natural health and childbirth. She is convinced that if you come to her, you believe that you are your first health care practitioner.

Aisha loves being a woman, wife and mother and enjoys doing yoga with her kids, playing volleyball, scrabble, identifying herbs, watching her children perform and watching “The Wedding Crashers” with her husband over and over again.
