Black August originated in the concentration camps of California to honor fallen Freedom Fighters, Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, William Christmas, James McClain and Khatari Gaulden. Jonathan Jackson was gunned down outside the Marin County California courthouse on August 7, 1970 as he attempted to liberate three imprisoned Black Liberation Fighters: James McClain, William Christmas and Ruchell Magee. Ruchell Magee is the sole survivor of that armed rebellion. He is the former co-defendant of Angela Davis and has been locked down for 40 years, most of it in solitary confinement. Prison guards assassinated George Jackson during a Black prison rebellion at San Quentin on August 21, 1971. Three prison guards were also killed during that rebellion and prison officials charged six Black and Latino prisoners with the death of those guards. These six brothers became known as the San Quentin Six. Some of the past guests who have participated in the Commemoration of Black August include: dead prez, Pam Africa, Mos Def, Boots Riley, Common, Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu, Black Thought & Many Others. WHAT IS HAPPILY NATURAL DAY? Happily Natural Day, originating in Richmond, Virginia, is an African Heritage festival committed to cultural awareness, holistic health and social change. Seven years ago, we saw the need for an event that says that natural hair was something more than just the latest style, and way more than just a chic look or fashion trend. At Happily Natural Day we identify with natural hair as a statement. Locks, afros and braids are socio-cultural symbols that are used as public proclamations of self-love and deep pride in being a person of African descent, and so, through Happily Natural Day, we promote the natural beauty of African people. Happily Natural Day is a continuance of the “Black Is Beautiful” campaigns of the 1960s and 1970s – started by Elombe Brath and the African Jazz Art Society and Studio (AJASS) via its “Naturally” shows and Grandassa Models. Happily Natural Day is ultimately married to the cause of redeveloping the maximum human potential of people of African descent through information and inspiration. Our annual August festival features workshops, lectures, live music, and merchants with one of a kind products from around the globe. It inspires us to love ourselves, to support Black-owned businesses, to heal ourselves holistically, and to live for the freedom that comes with doing for self. The mission of Happily Natural Day is to raise consciousness and cultural awareness, and to inspire collective works, self-determination and social change in the African community.

ITS A NEW DAWN, A NEW DAY, FOR MY BABY

Yummy, my 9 year old middle son/ twin started warrior school this week with the Akoben Institute- an Afrikan centered homeschool program run by respected community elders and educators, Mama Ena Yaa and Baba Mwalimu Baruti. His future is looking very solid.

THE GLAMORAWS LIFE

Thanks to encouragement from my girls Jamila and TT Coles, as well as the homie Sticman, I've been on raw food since 3/14. Its been an enjoyable journey. Here are some of the things I've made-

raw cinnamon apple raisin oatmeal porridge
raw pancakes with rawsage
raw nutmeat loaf with raw tomato sauce on top

raw trail mix w/ apples and grapes that I dehydrated, as well as raw nuts
raw brownies
Since its the second go round that I kicked cancer's ass... I figured what better way to improve my life than to go raw. I kept putting it off, saying ti takes too much time to prepare in addition to making foor for my vegan daughter and baby son, vegetarian two older boys and pescatarian husband....a lot of different dietary wants.... but I needed to do this for me. So I did. Not for wieght or anything like that- just a healthier me... and here I am today.... healthier- and 16 lbs. lighter.

Raw Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Two weeks deep into my raw foodist journey.... I come up with a substitution for one of my favorite things.... Reeses Cups. The presentation is kinda wack but trust me... It's great.

½ cup cocoa powder
¾ cup coconut butter
½ cup agave
½ teaspoon sea salt
5 tablespoon raw almond butter
½ cup raw vanilla almond coconut milk
*optional- cupcake wrappers

Blend everything except the almond butter in a food processor on high speed until silky smooth. Put half of the batter into a 16 cup mini muffin tin that has been lightly greesed with a little oil or use the cupcake wrappers instead. Put in the freezer for 5 minutes. Set the rest aside. Put the almond butter and almond or coconut milk in the food processor for about 1 minute, just enough to mix them, don't liquify it.  Put about 2 tbs into each cup and then cover with the rest of the chocolate mix. Freeze for about 5 minute, and keep frozen until you're ready. #CertifiedRawDopeness
